Day-128

After World War 1 The Turkish and Greek governments set about a mass population exchange which involved over 2 million people. In the hills of Karaköy only 9km from Fethiye there was a greek community of more than 2000 people living there at the time the exchange took place. Because of this the entire hillside became a big ghost town almost overnight.

I was lucky enough to get myself a lift to the ghost town from a nice woman who was at my hostel and happened to live nearby, she also gave me a bit of a tour on the way there. Just as I was leaving the hostel I found a guide book on Karaköy so I stopped to read it at several key points along the way and whenever I got a bit tired. I spent a good 5 hours hiking around Karaköy. Unfortunately the two  abandoned churches were closed for renovations but I managed to find a point in the fence line around the upper church where it was easy enough to jump over and take a few photos. Aint no fence gonna stop me… unless its electrified, or barb wired, or high, or doesn’t have holes in it…
