Today we did a tour of the underground tunnels on the opposite side of the Sarajevo airport. The tunnel was used to get citizens out of the city during the war, to transport weapons, water, food, medicine, and people of importance across the open fields without being shot by the snipers during the Siege. The tunnel is 800 meters long and took 4.5 months to complete at a depth of 5 meters which went straight under the airport.
The tour was really interesting and I highly recommend it to anyone coming to Sarajevo. Our tour guide lived through the war and used the tunnel herself during the Siege of Sarajevo when she was just 8 years old to flee to the USA until the war was over.
