Day-159

I caught a bus from Skopje to the lakeside town of Ohrid today. Lake Ohrid is apparently the largest body of fresh water in Europe. I took a walk around the town, checked out the fortress, basilica and ended up at a small picturesque church on the lake side just as the sun was setting.

As I was about to head back to my hostel I was approached by Jakov who introduced himself as a philosopher, rapper, poet , artist and asked if I would like to know anything about the area or Philosophy… I didn’t really have any plans and he seemed pretty interesting so suggested we grab a beer at a nearby lakeside cafe. On the way there we also picked up his friend who is also a Macedonian but had been living in New Zealand for most of his life.

For the next hour I had the most confusing, awkward and strange social experience having a beer with these two weirdos. Jakov dribbled some non sensical ramblings and jumped topics of conversations seemingly at random. His friend remained silent until I started asking him a few questions. Somehow we got onto the topic of Ireland and then he went a bit insane. He started getting really passionate about out his hate for the Irish and rambling on about two documents they have hidden, and something about being caught red handed… At some point into his rambling, Jakov started rambling at me about some other topic, so I simultaneously had two lunatics rambling about two different nonsense topics at the same time, neither acknowledging the other as talking to me. It was really really weird. Anyway, thats my strange encounter with the locals here so far.
