We awoke at a ridiculous 5 am this morning to watch the sunrise over our little floating reed island on Lake Titticaca and it was bloody freezing as the temperature drops to about 1 degrees overnight. After we were satisfied we crawled back into bed for a few more hours before begin awoken by some sort of fiesta happening outside our door. It turned out that today is one of the main celebratory days for carnival in Peru and after watching a group sing and dance around some pots the family that lived on the island proceeded to dance around the island spilling chicha and throwing confetti over all of the buildings. Once back on the mainland it was obvious the celebrations weren’t confined to the island as there was signs of confetti, streamers and balloons everywhere.
In the afternoon we boarded our bus to La Paz, which I swear we were told was only 5 hours long. However 9 hours later after one border crossing, one bus change and crossing an inlet of Lake Titticaca on some rickety spluttering boats and barges in the pitch black we finally made it to La Paz, The highest capital city in the world, home to Death road, the witches market and the moon valley. I think i’m going to like La Paz.
