Usually when I endeavour to spend a day visiting museums in a city I end up choosing to do so on the one day of the week when they are all closed. However today in Iquique we managed to choose a day where most of them happened to be free! The main street of Iquique is a huge beautiful pedestrian street scattered with hundreds of huge old colonial buildings, and some of these buildings are museums which you can check out. The streets are also scattered with Tsunami evacuation zones which was a little worrying since we experienced a small earthquake during breakfast.
At the end of the main street we came to a big bustling fish market and found ourselves at the wharfs edge watching about 30 huge sea lions fighting for the fisherman’s scraps which was really entertaining. A bit further down the road we came to another small outdoor fish market and another group of sea lions fighting for scraps but also having to fight off huge pelicans simultaneously. We also stopped to say G’day to this dude who was smashing sea urchins with a spanner and discovered that under their spiny shell sea urchins actually look like small shell-less crabs!
We finished the day watching the sunset with a bottle of rum, some more Cuban cigars and a Sushi dinner which was great, however here in Chile they have a habit of filling some of their Sushi rolls with creamed cheese, whats up with that Chile?
