Yay Beer! Any city that has an area called the “distillery District” goes alright by me, and I mean “alright” in an Australian way, not a Canadian way. The distillery district is a national historic site of Canada and comprises of more than 40 amazing old buildings and 10 streets over several blocks just to the East of downtown Toronto. These old buildings which were mostly built in the 1800’s once formed the largest distillery in the world. Most of the buildings are still intact and throughout the area there are numerous small galleries with information and old distillery parts on display.
Today there is only one brewery in the area called the Mill street brewery, with the rest being restaurants, cafes, gift shops and other assorted businesses.
I decided to do a bit of a self guided beer tour by exploring the old distillery district before doing some taste testing and flights (a sampling of 4 different beers) at the Mill street brewery, a nearby Sake brewery and then taking a walk down the waterfront to the Amsterdam Brewery. I also made a trip to the Steam whistle brewery I saw a few days prior, however their tours finished just as I arrived.
