This is a long post but I’m on a bus with not much else to do, if you stick around I will tell you a tale about exploring abandoned military bases, blood, Savage wolves and high speed chases.
I got a bus to Novi Sad which is a smaller city about 1.5 hours from Belgrade to have a look around for the day before getting a bus down to finally couch surf again in Nis.
The city is a more chilled out and smaller version of Belgrade. It had some nice churches, a cool fortress and the houses below the fortress looked like they were actually stuck in the past. But the first thing I noticed on the way in was a massive abandoned building that looked like a military airplane hangar.
It is on the outskirts of the town right on the banks of on of the rivers. I knew I wouldn’t have time to check it out, but made a mental note to come back to Novi Sad to do exactly that. When I got back to the bus station to get a bus back to Belgrade I was told the next bus wouldn’t be for 2 hours, which was odd because I had been told they leave every 15 minutes…
Well it must have been a sign. It left me just enough time to walk to the amazing urbex wonderland I had spotted and have a closer look.
When I went past earlier I noticed the fence was down on one side. When I got there though there was a truck parked out the front blocking that entry. So instead I found an old disused road that ran down the side of the property. Sure enough about 700-800 meters down I found a busted part of the fence and went in.
My goal was to get inside the hangar and take some shots from inside. But after being inside the fence line for only a few minutes and making my way across an overgrown field I noticed someone walking around with two dogs about another 500 meters down. I kept out of sight and waited until they had turned the corner of the hangar.
I wasn’t sure if maybe it was just someone taking their dogs for a walk or security, but I didn’t really want to find out.
After a few minutes of exploring the nearest building I started looking for a side door to the hangar, Thats when I heard barking off in the distance. About 500 meters down the side of the hangar I could see the two dogs running in my direction with the guard closely behind them. In an adrenaline filled few minutes I ran back out of the hole in the fence and found a stick to keep the dogs back if I needed it, as I knew they would reach me long before the guard could waddle his arse the 500 meters or so to catch up. Luckily the dogs hadn’t found the gap in the fence and were stuck on the inside with me safely on other side of it.
before the guard could catch up I jumped in a taxi back on the main road which coincidentally was driving past at the exact moment I came out of the disused road. It was an escape fit for an action movie haha. Oh and in the taxi I realised I had cut my leg somehow in the escape. I wouldn’t have even ran if it was just a security guard who busted me, but when there are rabid dogs involved then your first instinct is to get the fuck out ASAP.
Im still a bit bummed I didn’t get the photo I was after, but I am already considering going back in a few weeks. If that truck hadn’t have been there I could have walked straight in the front of the hangar and not through the exposed fields on the side of it.
