Athens is awesome! Maybe its because I have been stuck on the deserted Greek Islands and previously traveling through the sparsely populated Turkish coast, but it feels really good to be back in a big city again.
After checking out a small market and sorting out my SIM card with my couchsurfing host l spent the day exploring the acropolis, other assorted ruins and checking out Athens healthy street art scene. After watching the sunset with a few beers atop a hill close to the Acropolis something a bit strange happened on my way down…
An old Greek gentleman whistled to get my attention as l passed his stall selling assorted junk and started shouting “hail Hitler!”. I was totally shocked and thought l must have misheard at first until he shouted it a few more times and giving me the salute! Yep. There was no mistaking it. I instantly replied instinctively using the only Greek word I could remember. “Hitler is a fucking Malaka!”.
He stared back at me with a confused look on his face and didn’t say another word. I’m not too sure if he thought I was german and trying to have a go at me and was then was surprised to hear I wasn’t German, or that I knew the word Malaka, or just surprised I even reacted. Maybe he was just a bit crazy or racist or thought I was some sort of dreadlocked Neo Nazi, I don’t really know…
