Today was a really interesting, fun and unexpected day in Athens. I saw Adrian’s Library and Ancient Agora in the morning before meeting up with my little greek buddy Evita. I suggested we climb Lycabetus Hill but instead Evita suggested we go and see the Anarchist part of Athens which sounded like a much better idea.
While acting as my fill in tour guide Evita was kind enough to answer my stupid questions I had about the the Anarchists and Athens in general, but after seeing the neighbourhood she took me to see a couple of the university campuses and I was blown away to learn about how the operate, look, and the services they offer (free food, books and schooling!?). The Universities here have extremely close ties to political parties and sound like they run more like a parliament than a school board. It was really fascinating.
When you enter a campus in Athens (and apparently anywhere in Greece) the first thing you notice is that most of the reachable walls are covered in graffiti, murals and political street art. Any blank spaces are filled with political posters from rallies or supporting different parties. This first campus had no classes on because of a strike, but then we went to Evitas strike-less Campus and it was more of the same, except with tonnes of students around.
After we were done with the Campus tour we went for lunch at Linas favourite cafe (haha, sorry Lina :P) and then I bugged Evita to finally teach me how to play Backgammon and I totally kicked her arse lol. After the backgammon slaughter was over Evita left me to go and search for my official tour guide at the start point for the Athens Free Walking tour.
I met a girl from Sydney while waiting for the tour to start but unfortunately our tour was postponed until tomorrow because it was only the 2 of us that showed up. Instead we both went and checked out the Acropolis Museum together and then went to have a few drinks at Brettos Bar which I had read about online. This place makes its own Ouzo and Brandy among other spirits and has this cool wall of coloured bottles going on.
