Wow. This. Place. Is. Amazing. Hands down Meteora is now my favourite place in the world. I don’t even know how to begin explaining how amazing today was. My Camera, SD Card and Laptop all hate me for taking way too many photos.
I am thinking about writing a post about Meteora on my other site www.skaremedia.com soon. Especially because I found a couple of Amazing and usually unexplored ares of Meteora and I would like to write a post about how to access and find them, so keep an eye out for that if you are interested in coming here in the future.
It really amazes me the amount of people who have not even heard about Meteora before arriving in Greece. I think it is far more amazing than the Greece’s most known natural asset and the places people flock to Greece for, of course I am talking about the Greek Islands. If you have been to Greece and not been here then you definitely have a reason to return.
Anyway today went a little something like this:
Wake up early.
Hire an Scooter (18 Euro for 24 hours).
Circumnavigate the whole Meteora area.
Hike a trail in the lower area of Meteora due to thick fog in the higher section (which actually added to the magical feeling of the place).
Bouldering.
Fend off a herd of mountain goats.
Cross a downed fence and discover a hidden monastery on top of a spire.
Hike back down, and then back up another enchanted looking trail complete with abandoned church.
Return to my scooter to go and find some ruins spotted from the first trail.
Hike into the hills and find the recent ruins of what looks like a cave house and farm (bottom right image).
Get chased out of a nearby cave by cave wasps.
Find a tortoise.
Hike back to my scooter.
Spot an epic looking cave opening further up the road.
Eventually find my way through the forest to the massive cave complete with leftover scaffolding and materials from Hermit rock dwellings (big opening in the rock in the top right image).
Get slightly lost in the forest trying to find my way back to my scooter.
Spider web in the face.
Stop to watch 200 tiny birds attacking an Eagle.
Find an epically placed old rusted out Kombi van in a Blackberry field (top right image).
Jump back on my scooter just as my Couchsurfing mate Emilio passes me in a taxi.
Chase the taxi to the biggest monastery at the top.
Enter and explore the impressive monastery which includes a room full of human skulls.
Explore the surrounding rocks and lookouts on foot (left image).
Jump back on my scooter and hop between lookouts and monasteries as the sun sets.
Almost murdered by an overly affectionate monastery cat who wouldn’t stop trying to trip me over.
Make it back to my accommodation just on nightfall.
Go out for a mexican feast with Emilio.
Pass out content.
