Day-258

This is “Huaca de la Luna y Sol” ruins (the temple of the moon and sun) about 10km outside of Trujillo. Here there are two massive mud brick pyramids and an accompanying museum. One of the mud brick pyramids had been renovated 5 times by the pre-ican’s and each new renovation was built over the top of the last one, so digging into the pyramid is like going back in time. There are several places where the Pyramid has been “peeled” open and you can see the different layers from different periods complete with amazing vivid original paintings and sculptures. The main feature is on side of the pyramid where a massive wall of paintings and wall sculptures has been revealed which was pretty mind blowing.

Today ended up being a pretty long day. It seems that our (extremely luxurious) night bus also travels through time and arrived into Trujillo about an hour early, which meant we were in Trujillo at about 5am. We are actually staying in a small beach/surf town about 20 minutes from Trujillo called Huanchaco and we arrived just in time to watch the fishermen head out on their traditional fishing vessels called caballitos. Caballitos are small single person boats that look more like a wicker basket crossed with a surfboard than a boat, but they have been using them for thousands of years and they still seem to do the trick.
