Today I was planning on going fishing in one of the traditional caballitos boats but after our tour yesterday ran more than an hour late I didn’t get back in time to book it in. So this morning I went out to set myself a photojournalism type goal and photograph the fishermen returning with their morning catch instead.
Each morning bout 20 of these small boats head out for 1-2 hours and return with over 100 fish each. When they return to the beach they are swarmed by locals and kids who then buy the fish from the fishermen either for themselves, for their restaurants or to on sell later in the day.
While taking some photos a couple of locals told showed me the different types of fish (none of which I remember) and while they were sorting their catch into different sizes I watched them bargain for 7-8, big 60cm+ fish with woman for 20 soles total (about $8 AUD). A dollar for a big fresh fish isn’t too bad.
Before we caught our night bus to Lima later in the evening we did a bit of a bar crawl through Huanchaco and tried the famous peruvian costal delicacy called Ceviche, which is essentially raw fish which is “cooked” just using citrus.
