Day-279

The protests continue in Cusco. Today we had been assured if we booked an excursion with a tour agency then we would still be able to visit Moray and the salt pans even with the protests going on. So we spent the morning watching the protests before heading to the tour agency, however once at the agency we were informed that all of the roads to Moray were blocked by barricades. Towns and villages all around the area have apparently barricaded the roads with rocks, aeroplane parts, flaming wreckages and made it impossible for any vehicles to enter or exit so once again our plans were foiled.

We were supposed to leave Cusco tonight, however we refuse to leave before seeing Moray and the salt pans, so without any other options we spent the rest of the afternoon re-arranging busses, collecting refunds and re-checking into our hostel to stay an extra night and hopefully go tomorrow after the protests have officially finished.

Back at the hostel we were chatting to a couple of guys who were attempting to get to Machu Picchu last night but after 3 hours in the taxi and bribing their way through several barricades and back roads they had to turn around after having stones thrown at their taxi. I guess it is probably better we didn’t attempt to get out today. although it ended up feeling like a bit of a wasted day.
