Day 255
Today we had to do our best to dodge an onslaught of water bombs, super soakers, drive by’s and buckets of water at the Carnaval de Cajamarca. We decided to just chill in town today. After watching the weekly military ceremony in the morning it wasn’t long until we noticed a lot of kids carrying buckets…
Day 254
Ventanillas de Otuzco (Windows of Otuzco). This is one of the many ancient necropolis that are scattered throughout this area. These holes carved into the volcanic stone were used to house the remains of hundreds of the dead in Ancient Cajamarca. The trip out here was definitely worth it and they reminded me of Cappadocia in…
Day 253
Mmmm, delicious Guinea pig (Cuy Frito). This is a delicacy in Peru, Ecuador and Columbia too. Its a little pricey compared to other dishes as expected and I don’t think I would order it again for that fact, but it wasn’t too bad. It smelled and tasted a tiny but like fish which was odd, but…
Day 252
More ancient Peruvian mud brick pyramids! These pyramids are a bit further outside of Chiclayo than the ones we visited yesterday, and there are only 3 of them, however this site was much better than the huge popular complex of pyramids for several reasons. 1. These pyramids contain excavated sites which have been left open…
Day 251
Today we caught a minibus into the scorching hot Peruvian desert to explore the ancient pre Incan Lambeyeque Pyramids of Túcume. The 26 giant mud brick pyramids can be viewed from atop a nearby hill and although they are deteriorating in the harsh conditions quite rapidly, they are still much more discernible than the ancient “Bosnian Pyramids”…
Day 250
Ugh, So last night we boarded our 10pm sleeper bus in Cuenca intending to arrive in Chiclayo Peru at 9am the next morning. We were about 3 hours in and 10km from the border when our bus ‘broke down’. After waiting for an hour on the hot stuffy bus at 1.30am the driver flagged another…
Day 249
El Cajas National Park. This national park about 40 minutes outside of Cuenca and sits about 4000 meters above sea level. It is nicknamed the Scottish Highlands of Ecuador and after a hike around one of the hundreds of lakes I completely agree. Tonight we are jumping on an overnight bus to Peru, hazaaaa.
Day 248
Happy Australia Day! So Australia Day falls on a Sunday this year huh? Well that’s too bad for every Australian currently in Ecuador such as myself, because as we found out recently alcohol cannot be sold on Sundays anymore unless it is in a restaurant with a meal! I put the word out on couchsurfing…
Day 247
After our luggage got scented with vampire repelling garlic yesterday we spent half the day today attempting to rid our clothes, bags, towels, sleeping bags and everything else of the overpowering smell. Our attempted solution was rubbing lemons (which turned out to be limes) on our bags, airing out the sleeping bag and dumping everything…
Day 246
Today we said goodbye to the awesome waterfall filled, cliff riddled, volcano looming landscape of Banos. I went and took a couple of photos from the bridge on the edge of town before we left because I knew we would be on a direct 8 hour bus to Cuenca all day. Or so we thought….
